About the website
This site has been developed by the Munch Museum. It is divided into two sections; the first is a Norwegian language archive of Edvard Munch’s writings, and the second, an English translation of an extensive selection of Munch's literary sketches and writings related to art.
The English Edition
The English edition of Edvard Munch’s texts contain a selection of writings together with background material, secondary literature and information about the collection. The purple menu – under the heading “Munch's writings” – leads to the Norwegian archive of Munch's own texts (regardless of original language). The English translations are found in the red menu under the heading “The English Edition”. The red menu also contains an introduction describing the edition, a list of comments (regarding excerpts, persons, institutions and places), articles and videos on relevant topics, as well as a search window that allows you to browse in the translated English texts. The orange menu, under the heading “About the Archive”, contains guidelines (regarding transcriptions, encoding and photographic digitalisation), information about the digital archive as a whole, about the Munch Museum’s collection of Munch’s writings, and about the project behind the website, etc. All of the entries in the red and the orange menus are in English.
The Norwegian Digital Archive
Munch's own texts (regardless of original language) are found under the heading “Munchs tekster” [Munch's writings] in the purple menu. The materials compiled by the museum are divided into two groups. The red menu is labelled “Ressurser” [Resources] and contains lists of persons and institutions, commentaries to the texts, articles on relevant topics, digital stories, programmes for primary school (age 10 to 13) and for high school (age 16 to 19), a French page where Munch’s own texts written in French and translations into French are collected, a German page for Munch’s own texts written in German, as well as an entry for the English edition, cf. above. The orange menu, called “Om arkivet” [About the Archive] contains information about the site, the collection, and about the project behind the website, in addition to guidelines for transcription, encoding and photographic digitalisation, etc. Unless otherwise stated, all the material in this section of the archive is in Norwegian only.

Icons on the website
The three sections are colour-coded in purple, red and orange respectively. The colours are used in order to make it clear at all times what type of material your are dealing with. In addition to the menus, the colours appear in decoration lines and icons. The following is a list of the icons and what they indicate:

Searching
In the Norwegian digital archive
When you are in the Norwegian digital archive you can browse freely in Munch’s texts with the help of the search window in the upper right corner of the start page. If you know the inventory number you can use that as the search word, e.g. N 3456. For a more detailed explanation see the search result page.
In the English edition
When you are in the English edition you can browse freely among the translated English texts with the help of the search window in the upper right corner of the start page. If you know the inventory number you can use that as the search word, e.g. N 3456. For a more detailed explanation see the search result page.
The search page is also available on the red menu.
Maintenance and Updating
The website is maintained and updated by the Munch Museum. It was created under the project “Edvard Munch’s Writings” at the museum.
The graphic design was created by Grafisk Form and Markus Design in collaboration with the project “Edvard Munch’s Writings”.
The website is administered by Dr Linux.
